Your Heart Knows the Way: Learning to Trust Your Instincts Without Overthinking

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright Episode 118

Have you ever found yourself caught in the web of overthinking, unsure whether to take action or wait for clarity? The dance between trusting your intuition and knowing when to move forward is perhaps one of life's most nuanced spiritual skills.

Drawing wisdom from the Akashic Records and her book "Small Pearls, Big Wisdom," Dr. BethAnne Kapansky-Wright illuminates the delicate balance between yin and yang energies. When we feel stuck in mental gymnastics or find ourselves spinning in circles without resolution, it's often a sign we need to shift from forcing to allowing.

Through practical self-reflection questions and nature-inspired wisdom, this episode offers gentle guidance for recognizing when you're expending energy unnecessarily and how to gather your energy inward instead. The comforting message? If you miss an opportunity the first time, it will come back around—perhaps in an even better form when you're more prepared to receive it.

Key talking points include:

• The Akashic Records message about "changing patterns" and how zigzagging like birds in flight can actually be perfectly aligned movement
• Finding equilibrium between yin and yang energies – knowing when to push and when to allow
• How to recognize when you're expending energy without results and need to shift your approach
• Self-reflection questions to help determine if you should move or wait
• Learning from nature's wisdom about trusting cycles and resilience

This soulful exploration reminds us that we're never alone in our journey. We have countless resources beyond ourselves—spiritual guides, nature's wisdom, and the rhythms of life itself—supporting us when we open to receive. As we learn to trust the innate intelligence within, we discover that "the river always finds its way."

Join us next week as we explore the archetype of Taurus and how Taurus energy can inspire and ground us as we enter Taurus season.

Aloha and welcome to your Heart Magic, an illuminating space where psychology, spirituality and heart wisdom meet. Here's your host, dr Bethann Kapansky-Wright. Author, psychologist and spiritual educator.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

Aloha everybody, welcome to your Heart Magic. This is Dr Bethann Kapansky-Wright, and today we are talking about trusting our intuition, trusting our instincts and learning when to take action and move and when to stop and be receptive. And how do we know the difference between the two? And part of what inspired this topic today is when I sat down to ground this podcast episode. I've talked on here a bit about how I have different inspirations for what I'm going to talk about on the podcast. Sometimes it just comes to me and I have a set agenda in mind, and sometimes I'll just sit down before I'm going to hop on and record it and open myself up, open my heart and ask spirit to inspire me. I like to think that there is this entourage of various energetic muses and sources of inspiration in the greater collective, unconscious and spirit world that perhaps I can draw upon and that they get to play with me and come up with the topic. So when I sat down and put my hand on my heart to ground the episode today, I found myself spontaneously opening the Akashic Records and asking for a mini message to tap into the energy right now and bring something through that might feel soul nourishing and encouraging for everybody and when that message was coming through, it's all about changing patterns and trusting our instincts and our intuition and not over analyzing things and over questioning ourself I was like and that is today's podcast episode. Thank you, akashic Records. So I have a couple passages I want to share and I want to also dive a little bit into what the Akashic said and weave it all together on this particular episode of your Heart Magic, because that is what our heart magic is all about. It is taking our various gifts and flows of information, the things that were drawn to various inspirations, and alchemizing all of that in a way that is a reflection of our unique point of view, and finding ways to integrate the various weaves of wisdom that each of us has in our lives and that each of us has available to us when we come into our hearts and come into our spiritual connection and come into our soul, and we all get to do that in a way unique to us. So today I am offering my heart magic and sharing some Akashic wisdom and some psychological perspective and a couple passages from Small Pearls, big Wisdom.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

So, first of all, the Akashic Records. When I was opening the records, I saw this beautiful image of birds and they were flying and then they were changing directions and they were zigzagging and the words changing patterns came through. And when I opened the records, I opened them specifically for right now. It is the full moon in Libra today as I'm making this, and we're going into the second half of April. So that's what I opened the records for.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

What's the energy right now on this full moon and as we're going through the rest of the month? And, of course, whenever the Akashic gives energy updates, it usually extends for quite a while beyond just the moment, and this is an extension of what they've been saying about the entire year of 2025, that it's a year of remapping peace and re-navigating the spaces inside of ourselves and the spaces in our life and how we are putting things together in a way that we feel balanced and harmonious. And that work happens within us, regardless of what's going on in the outside world, which is certainly filled with a lot of chaos. Energy right now, our guidance, spiritually, is to keep finding ways to come back into our center and to play with the concept of peace and balance. And how do we keep allowing for our neural networks to rewire? How do we allow for new understanding of ourselves. How do we allow for things to repattern so we can find our way to a place that we feel more harmonious?

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

Many of us are in a place in life right now where life just isn't quite how we thought it would be and what it would look like. I think this is just true of life, and this is why the Rolling Stone saying you can't always get what you want, but if you try real hard, you'll get what you need. This is general life wisdom. Right, we make these plans and then life happens. And here we are in this dance with life, and so there is always an invitation to work with. This is what's presenting itself to us. This is where we're at, and how do we make sense of that for ourselves and how do we make peace with that?

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

If our life looks different than we thought it would, how do we either figure out how to change it if we don't like something and we're able to change it or how to be okay with it if change isn't available to us in ready form and we can't make a big change, we just have to change ourselves, and that is what trusting instincts and intuition is about and what the Akashic Records are talking about this year, when we see things changing patterns. Things are changing in the world around us. They are changing within us. Many of us have a new vantage point, a new relationship with how we experience ourselves, and that might be very different than even six months ago, maybe a year ago, definitely a couple years ago. And so as we're working on constructing our lives, as we move forward, we're also doing this deconstruction process and throwing out all the old junk that no longer fits us and old ideas that perhaps aren't really relevant to who we are now.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

And the guidance from the Akashic on that is that we can trust our instincts, we can trust our intuition, we can trust the innate knowing within us that is trying to move us and guide us in the direction, if we can get still and listen and not over question, just like that beautiful image of the birds that I saw zigzagging in the sky to a onlooker, somebody who's watching and doesn't know a lot about birds I am not somebody who knows a lot about them. It looks like a beautiful dance if I see them moving in all these different directions, but I wonder how do they all stay together? What is it that allows them to fly in this flock and fly together? And why do they go to the right one moment and now they're going to the left? And how do they know when to migrate and what cues are they listening to?

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

And there's something innate and instinctual in those migratory patterns and in the dance of the birds that has more to do with science and nature's wisdom and instinct than chaos. There is an organization to it and an organization to the pattern. And so when we can listen to our instincts and listen to our soul and get into our hearts, we can work with change and work with what can look like chaos on the surface and we can allow ourselves to change patterns and respond in a way that is instinctive and intuitive and oftentimes that has less to do with overanalyzing and overthinking things. It actually has very little to do with that. If we're overanalyzing something, we're probably not trusting our instinct, we're thinking too hard about it, and it has more to do with trusting our hearts and trusting our guts and listening to the wisdom of our body and trusting an inclination and trusting what is showing up and where we might feel guided to move. So with that I want to share a passage from Small Pearls, big Wisdom.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

This is called Equilibrium. There is a balance between yin and yang, movement and flow, making magic happen and allowing magic to happen. Nature in its seasons, intelligently and intuitively, knows when to push, rest, force and yield, when to adapt, change and evolve, and when creative growth is required, when to move, roam and migrate, when a space no longer fits or has become uninhabitable. We find our sense of harmony and equilibrium by experimenting with our sense of balance Learning to relax and receive when energetic effort isn't producing results. Learning to gather our momentum and point it in the right direction when going with the flow isn't taking us in a direction that feels good for us. Learning to show up and reach when we realize we've hibernated long enough. Learning to sink into hibernation if all we do is labor and push for growth. The beautiful part of this equation is that, just like the multitude of beings in the natural world, who all have their own rhythms, rhymes and seasons, so do we. We find our sense of equilibrium by tapping our sense of timing, our inner tools and our personal rhythm to find the seam between movement and stability. We learn to trust our innate intelligence and intuition to guide us, to keep contracting and then expand into the soulful being we are called to be.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

Something fun about this passage is that after I'd opened the Akashic Records and brought something through to share with everybody today, I always love to share something that I've written with all of you, and so I just let small pearls fall open, and it fell open to the two passages I'm sharing today, and they are absolutely perfect. They are in accord with the Akashic message and support what the Akashic records had to say, and I love that synchronicity. And for me it was such a reminder of don't overthink it, don't work too hard, coming up with something that is instinctive. I love to talk and share and teach. I love to talk about these things. Sometimes I overthink it and it's like I'm reinventing the wheel and forcing myself to come up with something newer or different or better, as if what I have isn't already enough. And so I took this message to heart today and was like you don't have to force this, just allow it to flow through. And I think that's what this passage is speaking about, and it's also what the Akashic was speaking about.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

We're not meant to force right now. We're meant to allow for life's flow and then work with the weaves that are coming through for us. So if we feel like we are pushing and efforting too hard and mentally and emotionally laboring, then that might be a sign to take a rest and play with balance and see where can I take a step back, where can I allow? Where can I let the magic happen instead of trying to make it happen? Where can I be a little bit more still and allow good things to come to me? Trust that good things are coming to me, trust that the insight is coming to me, trust that I'm putting a puzzle together that shows me a bigger picture of my life and my purpose at this time and maybe I don't have all the pieces yet, so that's why I keep jigsawing it and trying to figure it out and I'm missing something integral, and so I need to just allow right now, instead of trying to force that if we have done a ton of mental gymnastics around something and we've analyzed it and thought about it and we're not getting anywhere from the same vantage point that we're sitting in, that's a really good indicator that it's time to take a step back and move into the energy of allowance.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

So, when we're talking about equilibrium and trusting our inner voice and leaning more into our instincts and our intuition. One of the ways we can intelligently work with that is to just take a step back and look at how much energy am I pouring into this? And if the answer is a lot and things still aren't working, then you get to play with balance and you get to take a step back and you get to sit really still and you get to harness the energy and gather your energy into you. Right. When we think really hard and we try and problem solve and we scramble to figure it out, we are expending energy. Sometimes we're leaking it, especially if we are unnecessarily doing too much mental gymnastics in our head or worrying or acting in a way that we get really frenetic. We are not harnessing the energy. We are scattering energy everywhere and it leaves us feeling drained and oftentimes really disconnected from listening to our inner voice, which usually will help us figure out is it time to move or time to sit still and wait for more information to show up?

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

I wrote down a few questions that I think can be really helpful to ask ourselves for self-reflection when we are trying to figure out should I move, should I sit still? What should I do right now, and one of them is am I overanalyzing this If we feel like we know what we're supposed to do, but we keep coming back to questioning it and asking okay, angels, or asking spirit, now am I really supposed to do this? I do this sometimes where I will pull oracle cards and it will be on the exact same question and I feel like at some point the angels and the oracle cards are laughing at me and it's like we've told you this five times already. I don't know how much more confirmation you need. Maybe you can just trust and it's time for you to take a step. If you need, like a blinking neon sign, you can keep asking, but you keep getting the same thing over and over. So for overanalyzing it and thinking about it too much and too hard and expending all this mental energy, then probably that means that we either just need to take the step and go. If we have something in mind that we know we're supposed to do, or if we do not have the solution yet and we cannot figure it out, then just allow things to present itself. It's not time to know. The next question is do I feel guided to move? This is an excellent question and I feel like it's a pivotal one.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

If we feel guided to move but we're not doing anything because we're scared or we're stuck or we're overanalyzing, then usually energy hangs out with us, waiting for us to make our move. Things just kind of sit on hold. It's a little bit like if you've ever had to call the bank or an insurance company those are two places I had to call recently the provider line for insurance. I called my bank over the weekend and I was on hold for so long and you get that canned music over and over and maybe every few minutes they'll say like the next member representative will be available shortly. The wait is long right now, thank you for your patience. And then the music plays again and it can go on for quite a while.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

Well, that's kind of how energy feels when we are guided to do something and we're not doing it, and so things are just chilling with us and don't worry, I've often found that if we get really stuck in analysis, paralysis, and we're not making a move and we just can't force ourselves to, at some point, life gives us a nudge and it helps us along if we're really feeling stuck. Never forget your spiritual connection and you can always say higher power, angels, whatever it is that you're connected to. I feel really stuck right now. I don't know what to do. I'm terrified to make a move. I think I know the right thing to do, but I'm not sure. Help me see my way through this Great do, but I'm not sure. Help me see my way through this Great, you're not alone. You just did something, you made a move, you invited spirit into the mix, and that's always a good thing to do.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

But if the same answer keeps showing up over and over again, there's a strong likelihood that you're being guided to go in that direction. And if nothing's showing up, then I think usually there's a strong likelihood that it's not time yet and we're not meant to know. And the next piece will reveal itself to us and show itself to us in time. But we can't force it. We have to trust the season and we have to trust the soul cycle that we're in, and it's hard to find discernment between those two things. These are just self-reflection questions that you can reflect on.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

If you find yourself feeling kind of stuck but there's not a definitive, this is the right thing to do, because this isn't a black and white, step-by-step guide to following your soul. There's all sorts of books on there about listening to your soul, how to follow your soul, how to be in alignment with yourself, but at the end of the day, it's you, it's your soul, it's your spiritual connection, it's your intuition, it's your instincts. Nobody can give you a 10-step formula for how to precisely follow those, because it's about trust and it's about learning to work with balance. That's what that passage, equilibrium, was all about. It's about opening up to playing with the energies in our life and playing with pushing if we haven't been pushing and seeing well what happens if I just take a step, any step, because I'll feel more in control. If I take a step or I've been taking too many steps and I feel really diffuse in energy, what happens if I just sit still. We learn what's right for us through experimentation and through play, and that is what the Akashic Records also said for this month and for the energy right now.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

I saw this image in the Akashic Records when I was getting the energy, where it showed something going around in a circle and if you miss it the first time, you have time to grab it the second time or to like hitch a ride the second time. So, for example, if you're waiting for your luggage and it's going around in a big circle and your suitcase goes by the first time and you can't chase after it, you just wait. It'll come back around. You grab it the second time and now you're more prepared. Or if you were trying to hitch a ride on like a slow moving carousel and you missed it the first time and didn't hop on, it'll come back around again. You can hop on the next time.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

And so there was this ease in the records that, as we're changing patterns right now, as we're changing how we're doing things in our life, as we are learning to drop more deeply into a relationship of trust with our intuition and our instincts, and trusting the less set path and more of the creative path, the wildhearted path, the intuitive path, the path of allowance and trust, as we're doing those things, don't overthink it. If you feel like you've missed an opportunity or you've been stuck and you've waited too long, it'll come back round again. It'll come back probably in even better form and this time you'll be more ready for it because you'll be looking for it. So there was a sense of ease to this and a sense of play and experimentation. Like, don't take this too seriously right now, don't get into this perfectionist mode where you feel like you have to do it a certain way. Just trust that something inside of you is guiding you. Trust that if you can just lean into that inner sense of self, those inner instincts, just like birds doing migratory patterns, that you don't have to think about it, you really can just trust and we can use our minds and put our thinking caps on and ask these journaling prompts and do this self-reflection so that we can be more mindful and we can be more intentional and we can be conscious about our choices. But it's okay to not overthink, to just trust, to allow to do some self-reflection and then get on with life and just see what happens and know that we are protected.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

We can draw on our spiritual protection at any time. We are not in a zero-sum game where we are doing all of it on our own and we have to force and muscle our way through life. And it's us against the forces. We have grace, we have spirit, we have love, we have magic, we have our connection that we can lean into and we can open up and receive support from something bigger than just ourselves. We have mother nature. We have the essence of life that is running through nature and running through the planet. There's so many energies bigger than just us. We have resources and we forget that sometimes when we get to in our own heads and our own tunnel vision, feeling like we have to do it all. We are not alone. We can open up to receiving and we can trust that if we don't know which way we're going, we do not have to work too hard to figure it out. We will get there eventually. The river always finds its way.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

So with that, I want to close with one more passage from Small Pearls, big Wisdom, and this is called Nature's Teachers. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature the assurance that dawn comes after night and spring after the winter. Quote by Rachel Carson. You can't stop a river from flowing. It will press on somehow. You can't stop the daylight, the twilight or the endless phases and faces of the moon. Each follows an innately cyclical rhythm, dancing in harmony with something much bigger than us. You can't stop a dandelion from growing. They are golden messengers of resilience that find a way to push through life's cracks, assuring us that, no matter the obstacle, life will always find a way.

Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright:

Each of these natural teachers helps us remember this vital truth. Life is composed of many forces bigger than us, and we can't stop it from happening. We can't control, cajole or force. We can't outplay, outwit or outlast. The best we can do is keep an open mind, an honest heart and a sense of humor and learn to meet life on its terms, not where we think it should be, but exactly where it's at. Love me some messages from nature and the wisdom they have for us. It feels perfect to close with that today, especially since next week is Earth Day, on the 22nd. So I hope this is a beautiful week for you. I hope you can find trust in the flow of life right now. I will be back next week with a new episode of your Heart Magic, where we will be talking about the archetype of Taurus as we move into Taurus season and how that archetype, how Taurus energy, can inspire us and ground us. In the meantime, as always, be well, be love, be you and be magic and be magic.
