The Artist's Journey: Navigating Life with Creativity and Purpose
Have you ever stopped to consider that you're painting a masterpiece each day? The colors you choose, the strokes you make, and the perspective you bring all contribute to your unique canvas of existence.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright invites us on a transformative journey into the artist's mindset, where we discover how approaching life as a creative endeavor opens doors to greater authenticity, joy, and meaning. Drawing from the Akashic Records' current theme of "Soul Safari," she explores the delicate dance between receiving life's unfolding map and actively charting our own course. This beautiful tension between surrender and initiative represents the yin and yang energies we all navigate as we craft our experiences.
Through a moving reading from "Small Pearls Big Wisdom," we learn that "every day we create something new"—whether it's kindness, gratitude, joy, presence, or even grief. The power lies not in judging these creations but in bringing mindfulness to the process and appreciating the sum of our art. When we embrace this perspective, we move away from rigid expectations and into a more gracious, playful relationship with life itself.
Perhaps most importantly, the artist's mindset helps us reframe challenges not as failures but as valuable experiences that add depth and dimension to our story. Rather than harsh self-judgment, we can ask, "What can I learn from this? How is this adding value?" This simple shift transforms our relationship with adversity and opens pathways to greater wisdom and compassion.

Aloha and welcome to your Heart Magic, an illuminating space where psychology, spirituality and heart wisdom meet. Here's your host, dr Bethann Kapansky-Wright. Author, psychologist and spiritual educator.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :Aloha everybody. This is Dr Bethann Kapansky-Wright and welcome to your Heart Magic. Today we are talking about being the artist of our lives and approaching each day like a new creation. So first I wanted to check in on a little energy update and tie in the Akashic Records with what we're talking about today on the podcast.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :When I did the Akashic Records for the third quarter of 2025. The theme of it was Soul Safari and it was all about the energies of curiosity and discovery and approaching life right now as if we are on an adventure and there is this ever unfolding map and as we are going about the journey, we get the next piece and we see this next square of the map unfold in front of us and perhaps we also chart it out and write out. Here's what I just experienced, and if we were doing an illustration of our own individual metaphorical map, maybe we would draw something on the page or do something that represented whatever territory we've just traversed, what we've just discovered on this soul safari. And I love this message from the Akashic Records. I thought it was so playful and it is such a beautiful invitation to approach life with more curiosity and an attitude of discovery, and I think that for many of us, we would agree that those are very good qualities to approach life with. And I also think it is hard because many of us want that predictability, we want a sense of certitude, we want to know how things are going to look, we want to see more of the map than what we actually get.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :And then we get really frustrated when we feel like our blueprint for life, our map of self, isn't unfolding fast enough, isn't unfolding fast enough and all we've received is just what we need for that day or that week. But we're like, no, like what's the plan? I want to know the direction that I'm going, and I've always found this beautiful synergy that can be really challenging but also so tremendous when we approach life and our relationship with spirit, with the essence of co-creativity, and remembering that, yes, we are charting the direction that we're going, we are pointing our heart and the direction that we want to move. That helps create the map. At the same time, we are also receiving from the universe, receiving from life, receiving from our circumstances, the next step, and so we work with the tangible, we work with what we're calling in, what is actually coming through to us, what is presenting itself to us and those become our ingredients, that we continue to chart our course and check in with ourselves and decide what direction do I want to best move, based on how the winds are blowing right now. So it's not an either or it's a both, and it is us surrendering, receiving, accepting the vision, calling the vision, in working with more of that feminine energy of receptivity, that yin energy of receptivity, and it's also that yang energy, that very active energy, that masculine, the archetype of Mars type energy, where we put our best foot forward and say this is the direction I want to move in. If I want something to happen, I'm going to have to make it happen. It's both, and part of our human journey is learning about both of those energies, learning how to find harmony and those dualities and find our pathway through. So I love working with these kinds of concepts, I love sharing them on the podcast and I love this idea that we are on a soul safari for the month of July and August and September and as we're going about this soul safari, we will be not only discovering but creating this new map, creating new skills, creating new ways of being that, according to the Akashic Records, will be helpful to us and serve us and be necessary for the fourth quarter of 2025, when we get there.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :So I want to share a passage today from Small Pearl's Big Wisdom, and this is simply called Every Day a New Creation. It is passage 309. Every day we create something new. Every day we create something new a kindness, a gratitude, a discontent, a fear, a love, an imagining, a joy, a presence, a dream, a hope, a grief, a peace. All of it is a creation. Each moment we are here, even if we don't realize we are creating. The more mindful we are about our relationship to creativity, the more we can bring intention to the process and reflect on what we want to make of our days. The point isn't to judge our creations as better than or worse than, but to embrace our creations and appreciate the sum of art. Even on our difficult days, we can create a moment for self-love and discover a new insight into what it means to be human. All colors have value. If we choose to see the value and if we don't like the colors we are using on the canvas of our lives, we can always make changes and focus our creative efforts on generating more of the things we'd like to focus on Whether we see ourselves as artists or not. We are still artists who hold the tools to sculpt, carve and paint our lives through utilizing the treasures and our experience, finding meaning so we give our life shape, and cultivating curiosity and discovery so we can keep living with intention and openness, each day, an opportunity to say I wonder what I shall create.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :Something that has served me really well, as I think as a writer and I was able to take so many of the metaphors that come with writing and apply them to life, is these life wisdoms, is this idea that we are all artists and we are all creating every day. And I think when we adopt the mindset of being an artist, of writing our own narrative, of crafting and cultivating a life that is harmonious and in integrity and meaning with us, when we adopt that mindset, it shifts some things, and part of what it shifts is it moves us away from more of a rigid idea that we are supposed to do life a certain way and live up to certain expectations or ideals or our idea of ourself or how life should be, and it moves us to a more grace-filled and gracious way of playing with life and seeing it as this malleable, ever-unfolding canvas that we are constantly creating on, and so when we feel like we are failing or making a mistake, when we feel like we've wasted our time, there is room there to re-script that, to reinvent it, to look at that as an experience that has value to our soul on some level, and in our humanness and in our conscious mind, we can use our heart, wisdom and use our intellect and perhaps draw on some sources of inspiration around us and look at well, what can I learn from this? Instead of judging myself and feeling like this has no value, what can I learn from it? How can I see this as something that is adding value to my life? Maybe I've been excavating my shadows, or learning about something in life that the lesson there was, all that glitters isn't gold, that things might not always be the way that they look. Maybe deeper discernment was discovered, or learning that sometimes choosing the path of authenticity means letting go of things that don't serve us, even when that's really painful. There's a lot of things we can learn from those shadow moments in life, from the grit in life, from the hard things in life, and when we see ourselves as artists, it opens up potential to think about our journey in a more expansive way that is rich with color and metaphor and imagery, and I think that really speaks to our soul. There's just so much more grace there, there's so much more self-love and it's so much more playful and it supports us and moving through whatever it is we are shedding or leaving behind and move into brighter territory.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :I love the idea that if we don't like what we're creating in our life, fabulous, we get to start with a blank slate. We can take everything that we've learned and what we have been doing and get out a clean sheet of paper and say to life I want to do over, I want to restart and, even if I can't undo everything that came before, I want to alchemize that and move in a new direction. And I want to alchemize that and move in a new direction and I want to create something better. I want to create something that feels more authentic or more in integrity. Now that I know what doesn't, I want to have a creation that feels more meaningful to me. I really feel that life loves fresh starts. It loves it when we declare a new day, a new dawn, a new beginning. Every day we're given a new day. Nature echoes clean breaks and new starts, and it's not about leaving behind what came before or pretending like that didn't happen. It's more about acknowledging that there's value in what came before and also saying I want to step into fresh energy, I want to step into new growth. I choose new life and I choose to let myself alchemize and recycle and shed and transform whatever it is that came before and support me in integrating and becoming a higher expression of myself, a more authentic expression, a more meaningful expression, and walking a path that feels even more real and true to me. And I'm going to integrate the wisdom from everything that I just learned.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :Also, on a really basic level, it's fun. It is fun to hop out of bed and to think well, what can I create today? If you're excited about the day before you? Fabulous, that kind of helps support, that creative energy and your mind will go there easily. If you are not excited about the day before you and you're working with some grittier things in life, then it is still a playful way to say well then, how can I work with this today? How can I create something good or kind? How can I create a moment in nature? How can I create a little bit more compassion. How can I create an act of love that I fling out into the world? Cast out like a little pebble, and it creates a ripple effect.
Dr. BethAnne Kapansky Wright :So I love the playful aspect of it and the idea that we can be these narrators of our life and these creators and these craftsmen, and using that as a metaphor to approach each day as a new creation and realizing that every creation holds value. It's not about the product. It's about the process and what we learn and how we grow and how we might expand our mindset and expand our hearts and expand our wisdom. When we are artists in our life, we declare our presence and then we set our course for whatever it is that we're wanting to create in our world, whatever goals, visions, dreams, hopes, healing qualities, essences, whatever it is, we point our heart in that direction and say this is the direction I want to move in, take more ownership and really declare our soul sovereignty and our affirmation and our belonging and belief in ourself when we do so. Thank you so much for joining me on the podcast today. I will be back next week with an all new episode. In the meantime, have a beautiful week and, as always, be well, be well, be loved.
